If you’re looking for a movie that challenges the traditional stereotypes and challenges the glass ceiling, HICHKI is the one to watch. This coming-of-age movie is perfect for all audiences, with a special focus on teenagers and the significance of having an understanding and excellent teacher who can help you turn obstacles into stepping stones. I have to mention that Siddharth P. Malhotra, the director and co-writer, and the Yash Raj Productions team have done a remarkable job in creating this movie that will be remembered.
This movie was released in 2018 and starred multiple award-winning actresses, including Rani Mukherjee. Other supporting actors that play a key role in the movie include Niraj Kabi, Rohit Saraf, Supriya, Sachin Pilgaonkar, and many others. This movie has been made a blockbuster thanks to the contribution of every actor to their character’s justice. Through cinematography, the directors and others on the set have beautifully exhibited their skills. The songs have been performed flawlessly by Jasleen Royal, Harshdeep Kaur, and Benny Dayal. Khol De Par is one of my favorites, and just like coffee, it will give you instant freshness and encouragement.
The movie Hichki revolves around Ms. Naina Mathur, a teacher who is ambitious and innovative, suffers from Tourette syndrome and a sarcastic tongue. After steady rejections from various schools, she gets a job at St. Notker, her alma mater, only to find out that she is teaching 9F, the underprivileged, stubborn children. Any other teacher would’ve rejected the offer at once, but Naina thought differently: There are no bad students, only bad teachers. She believed that they were all special in their own ways, and somebody just needed to be their guiding star. She noticed that they blamed their situation and poverty for their behaviour, and the movie depicted the innumerable circumstances where she crossed all boundaries just for her students. One such wise thought of hers is: Aakhir soch soch ki hi toh baat hai… kyun ki, kyun aur kyun nahi mein bas soch bhar ka hi faasla hai (It’s just a matter of the way one thinks… because only a thought separates why and why not). Here are the lyrics to one of the amazing and motivational songs from the movie, which I’m sure will give you the energy to tackle any problem.
Aath samander apna amber
Khoj le ab tu apne dum par
Phoonk marke dhool jhadle
Chod chad ke saare chappar
Khol de par, Khol de par
Naina herself didn’t have a very smooth life. As a toddler, she was bullied and thrown out of school because of her hiccups, which caused anxiety and worsened her Tourettes. Her father didn’t support her and left the family when she was a kid because he was ashamed of her. Though her mother left no stone unturned in her upbringing, she lacked her father’s warmth. Her younger brother, Vinay, a skilled chef, was her stress buster, and he could always get a grin on her tired and worried face. But patience and zeal are always rewarded. Her students made her proud by acing their examinations and even becoming prefects. Looking at Naina’s students’ love for her, her father also had a change of heart and believed in her.
Hichki is a great pick for movie nights with your family, but make sure to keep some tissues as everyone is going to need one at the end of the movie, which just makes sure that tears fall from everybody’s eyes, even the emotionless. I think it’s a must-watch for everyone, like Mr. Wadia (the negative character of the movie), who thinks that girls and people with some disabilities are less capable because Ms. Naina Mathur will prove them wrong with her compassionate nature and witty tongue. I would like to conclude with another of the many iconic lyrics from the film:
Ratti rattai saari chodo bhi dunyadaari
Bhaagi jo tevar tere bolenge sab annari
Sabko manane ki terin ahi zimmedari
Unche aasmano pe likh de tu hissedari
Khol de par, Khol de par
